In a nationwide strike in Greece involved 2,5 million
March 12, 2010 – 3:07 pmGreek trade unions began a second for the last month nationwide strike to protest against tax increases and cuts in social benefits, reports the Associated Press. The action, which will last night, will be attended by about 2,5 million people – half the working population of Greece.
Because of the protest almost completely halted public transport in Athens and other major cities Greece, did not work out many journalists, doctors, air traffic controllers. Expected to join them police officers, Coast Guard and representatives of many other professions. Terminated majority of flights, has also stopped working ferry.
As part of the strike in major cities of Greece also held numerous demonstrations.
> Strikes associated with the decision of the Greek Government to reduce the budget deficit from 12.7 % of GDP to 8,7% due to higher taxes and cuts in social benefits. These measures are part of a long-term plan to reduce the budget deficit to the level of 3% of GDP.
According to unions, the authorities are trying to force workers to pay for the bailout, and all actions taken will only lead to further economic decline population.
